I knew I'd love it, too, because you love it and we have similiar tastes in so many things. :-) I did not taste any sopapillas, but I did not spend nearly enough time there. Next time around...

So glad you made it to NM. I always knew you'd love it. The frybread at Taos IS good (my mouth is watering thinking about it) and the Frontier has kind of a special place in my heart. You'll be going back, no doubt about it. Did you get to taste any sopapillas? The few found around here are just not the same....

Hi, Chris! Thanks for that extra info. Always good to know that stuff. I plan on coming back--you'll have to hook me up with some more fabulous New Mexican food. :-)

Yes, Orlando's never fails to please. It was recently voted best New Mexican food and best green chile and best red chile in the Taos News "Best of Taos 2009". I also understand that they serve awsome burgers.
FYI, the Taos Pueblo is a World Heritage Site.
Hope you come back again soon.

I hope to visit New Mexico again soon. I really loved it there. It was a completely different vibe from anywhere else I've visited. Thanks for the foodie tip. :-)

Best come back--there are delicacies galore here in Santa Fe. I came here to draw Ravens, which I continue to do, but was so entranced by the farm markets that I paint the ingredients of recipes in Art From the Kitchen-Painted and Served. You can find images at www.bethsurdut.com
If you do return, for great Indian vegan, try Annapurna's in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque .

Yes, it does look like Casa Grande. I thought that myself. :-)

As for the fry bread, it probably is similar to Rhode Island Johnny Cakes. Many different cultures have some form of fry bread. The Italian version that I mentioned is made with wheat flour, but it's basically the same thing, made the same way. One of the things I talk about in my cookbook-in-progess is how different cultures/countries have similar dishes with the distinguishing features often being spices or cooking vessels. People around the world are more similar than we realize, and that is reflected in cuisine.

That picture of the pueblo reminds me of the ruins we saw at Casa Grande. That must be what it looked like when Hohokam lived there.

Was that corn fry bread similar to the Johnny Cakes we Rhode Islanders make with yellow stone-ground corn meal? JCs are served with maple syrup too.
